🚗 1. Requirements for Title & Registration (New & Used)

Alaska law requires that you apply for a title in your name within 30 days of purchase and that every vehicle operated on public roads be registered.

📄 1) Proof of Ownership

You must provide one of the following:

  • Used car: The previous owner’s original vehicle title properly signed and reassigned to you (with seller’s signature in the assignment section).
  • New car: Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) assigned to you (dealer must assign this if the vehicle is new).

⚠️ If you have a lien, Alaska will record that lien on the Alaska title — you may need a lien release letter if the lien is paid off.

🧾 2) Odometer Disclosure

  • For most cars under 20 years old, an odometer reading must be shown on the title or provided on a separate odometer disclosure statement.

📜 3) Proof of Insurance

  • Have auto liability insurance that meets Alaska’s minimum requirements before the vehicle can be registered.

📇 6) Identification

  • A valid driver’s license or state ID (or other acceptable photo ID).
  • If someone else is signing for you (e.g., a family member), a notarized power of attorney is required.

📅 Deadlines

🗓 30 Days: Title and register the vehicle in Alaska within 30 days of purchase.

🚗 If move to Alaska, generally must register your vehicle within 10 days of establishing residency.
