🕐 Deadlines

  • You must apply for an Indiana certificate of title within 45 days after purchasing or acquiring a vehicle (new or used). If you wait longer, the BMV can charge a late filing penalty.
  • After titling, you generally must register your vehicle within 45 days of purchase too.
  • New Indiana residents must title and register vehicles previously owned out of state within 60 days of moving to Indiana.

🧾 1. Proof of Ownership to Get a Title

To obtain an Indiana title (required before registration):

New Vehicle (Dealer)

  • The dealer normally handles submission of the Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) to the BMV for an initial title.

Used Vehicle (Private Party)

  • You need the original title signed over by the seller with the purchaser section completed.
  • If there’s no title space for odometer info, you may need an Odometer Disclosure Statement.
  • If liens exist, a lien release or applicable documentation must be provided.

Out-of-State Title

  • Bring the current out-of-state title and any lien info.
  • A VIN inspection is required for out-of-state vehicles before the BMV will issue an Indiana title. This can be done at a BMV branch or by a law enforcement officer (using Form 39530).

🛡️ 3. Sales Tax

  • Sales tax is 7%
  • Reciprocal state with CA
  • Trade in allowed

🪪 4. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Inspection

  • VIN inspections are required for vehicles not previously titled in Indiana (including out-of-state titles). Can be done out of state by a peace officer, CA DMV or vehicle verifier on the IN verification form
