Kentucky DMV Services

⏱️ Deadlines

  • If you buy or acquire a vehicle (new or used) in Kentucky, you must apply for title and registration within 15 days of purchase/possession.
  • If you move to Kentucky with a vehicle titled elsewhere, you must title it in Kentucky within 15 days of it being located in the state.

🧾 1. Proof of Ownership & Title Documents

Every vehicle must be titled before it can be registered in Kentucky.

🆕 New Vehicle (Purchased from a Dealer)

You will need:

  • Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MSO) properly assigned/signed to you by the dealer.
  • Application for Kentucky Certificate of Title/Registration (Form TC96‑182).
  • Window sticker or dealer invoice showing MSRP and options if not using total consideration for usage tax value.

🚗 Used Vehicle (Private Party or Dealer)

You must bring:

  • Current title signed over to you (with seller’s signature notarized if required).
  • Application for Kentucky Certificate of Title/Registration (Form TC96‑182).
  • If the title was issued before modern titles combined the assignment back into the certificate, you may need the separate TC96‑182 assignment.

🚙 Out‑of‑State Vehicles

  • Bring the out‑of‑state title (signed and notarized if required by that state).
  • If the title isn’t available (e.g., home state only issues registrations), bring the current registration and/or bill of sale.
  • A VIN inspection by the county sheriff is typically required for out‑of‑state vehicles.

🪪 2. Insurance & Identification

  • You must provide proof of current Kentucky auto insurance on the vehicle you’re titling.
  • Bring valid ID (Kentucky driver’s license, state ID, or other acceptable ID). Clerks will also record your Social Security number or federal tax ID for businesses.

🧮 3. Usage Tax (Sales/Use Tax)

  • 6% sales tax on MSRP or sales price, whichever is higher. Requires a copy of the Factory invoice or sticker with MSRP
  • Reciprocal state with CA
  • Trade in credit allowed

📄 4. Vehicle inspection

Inspection is required to be completed in KY at the clerk’s office or sheriff’s department

🧠 Important Notes

  • You cannot legally operate the vehicle until it’s registered and has valid plates.
  • The 15‑day deadline is strict — missing it may result in penalties.
  • If the name on the title doesn’t match your ID, you must provide supporting affidavits (e.g., marriage license).
