Requirements for a New Car (Purchased from a Dealer) 

Documents and Information Needed

  • Dealer Report of Sale (EDRS) submitted by the dealer
  • Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) to create the Nevada title
  • Nevada auto insurance from a Nevada-licensed company
  • Valid identification (Nevada driver license or ID card)
  • Odometer disclosure statement (usually included in dealer paperwork)

Possible Additional Requirements

  • Emissions test if you live in counties such as Clark or Washoe

Requirements for a Used Car (Private Seller or Out-of-State) 

Documents Needed

  • Original vehicle title signed by the seller
  • Bill of sale (recommended)
  • Nevada auto insurance
  • Valid identification

Inspections and Disclosures

  • VIN inspection if the vehicle has never been registered in Nevada
  • Odometer disclosure for vehicles 2011 or newer
  • Emissions test if required in your county

Important Nevada Rules

  • You must register the vehicle within 30 days of purchase.
  • Nevada insurance is required before registration.
  • If the car is financed, the lender holds the title until the loan is paid off.

  • Sales tax vary by county: 6.850% Mineral, Esmeralda, Eureka and Humboldt
