🚘 1. General Rules & Deadlines

• If you move to New York with a car from another state, you generally have 30 days after establishing residency to register and title the vehicle in New York.
• You must insure the vehicle before registration, and you must register within 180 days of the effective date on your NY insurance ID card.

📄 2. Required Documents

To title and register a vehicle, you’ll need several core items:

🧾 A. Ownership Proof

You must show proof you own the vehicle before the DMV will issue a title/registration. Acceptable proof depends on how/where it was purchased:

📌 New Vehicle

• Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) and
• Dealer’s Certificate of Sale (Form MV‑50).

📌 Used Vehicle from a Dealer

• Dealer’s Certificate of Sale (Form MV‑50) plus the prior owner’s title “signed over” to the dealer.

📌 Used Vehicle from a Private Seller

• Prior owner’s original Certificate of Title completed and signed to you.

📌 Out‑of‑State Vehicle

• Out‑of‑state title or transferable registration in your name, or other documentation acceptable as proof of ownership.
  • If there’s a lien and the title is held by a lienholder, you may need a certified copy of the title or a verification letter from the other state’s title authority.

Note: Vehicles outside certain age thresholds may have special ownership documentation. (e.g., older than 1972, see DMV rules).

🪪 3. Identification & Insurance 

• Proof of identification & age: A valid NY driver license, permit, or NY non‑driver ID card is recommended. Other documents can be used if you lack these — the DMV’s proof guide lists acceptable IDs.
• Proof of NY Bar coded automobile liability insurance

💰 4. Taxes 

• NY Sales Tax Varies by county
• NY is reciprocal with CA
• Trade in allowed but trade cannot be a lease vehicle

🛞 5. Inspection

• When you register a car in NY, the DMV typically provides a 10‑day inspection extension sticker. You must get your vehicle safety (and emissions, if applicable) inspection before that extension expires.

🧠 6. Out‑of‑State & New Residents

• NY driver’s license is required. If not provided will require 6 points of ID for title and registration to be completed

📃 7. Special Situations

• Lienholders: If a lender holds the title, you may need to provide additional documentation from them.
• No title available: NY has procedures for vehicles where titles aren’t available (e.g., older cars or special cases). Contact DMV before purchase.
• Transfers between vehicles: If you already own a NY vehicle, you can transfer its registration/plates to your new vehicle with proper paperwork.
