🚘 1. When You Must Title & Register

• You must title and register a vehicle when you buy or acquire it before operating it on public roads.
• If you’re a new Maine resident, you generally have 30 days after establishing residency to transfer your out‑of‑state title/registration to Maine.

🪪 2. Title Requirements 

Maine requires titles for most vehicles — but model‑year cutoffs apply:

• Motor vehicles less than ~25 years old require a Maine title (e.g., 2001 or newer in 2026).
• Vehicles older than the cutoff may not require a Maine title; instead they can be registered with proof of ownership/registration.

🧾 Documents for Title

When titling your vehicle (if required):

✔ Current title signed by seller (used vehicles)
✔ Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MSO) (for new vehicles)
✔ Title application (provided by BMV)
✔ Lien release if there was a lien (if applicable)
✔ Odometer disclosure if required (vehicle under certain age)

• If the title doesn’t have room for odometer info, you may need a separate odometer statement (Form MVT‑32).

📄 3. Registration Requirements

In Maine, titling and registration are separate steps for most vehicles:

🌟 Step A: Pay Excise Tax

Before registering, you must pay the municipal excise tax at your local town or city tax office. This tax is based on vehicle age and original MSRP.

• First year the tax rate may be high (e.g., $24 per $1,000 MSRP); it declines with age.

Get a receipt — you must show it when registering.

🧑‍💼 4. Proof of Insurance & ID

• You must have current auto insurance that meets Maine liability requirements before registration.
• Bring your valid ID as required by the town office or BMV.

📅 5. Taxes

• Maine generally requires 5.5% sales Tax based on purchase price, accessories, warranties, etc.
• Excise tax  varies on vehicle information and purchase price, excise is a municipal property tax paid annually at registration.

🧠 Notes

• Older vehicles: Cars above a certain age (typically older than ~25 years) may not require a title, but still require registration with valid ownership evidence.
• Timing: Registering at your local town office first for excise tax is often necessary before a BMV branch finalizes your registration.
