⏱️ Deadlines

  • Title transfer: You have 15 days after the sale date to transfer the title into your name. If you wait longer, a late fee applies.
  • Registration: You generally register at the same time as you transfer the title so you can legally operate the vehicle on Michigan roads.

🧾 Core Documents Needed

📘 1. Vehicle Title

To title a vehicle in Michigan you must present:

  • The original title properly completed by the seller (signed & dated by seller and buyer).
  • The odometer reading completed on the title; if there’s no space, you may need a separate odometer disclosure.
  • If there was a lien, the title must show the lien release or you must provide a lien termination letter from the lender.

For a new vehicle, you typically get a Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO) from the dealer and a Michigan title application is submitted to SOS.

If the vehicle was owned out of state, you bring the out‑of‑state title — Michigan can issue a Foreign Ownership Registration Only if the title stays with a lienholder.

🛡️ 2. Proof of Insurance

You must have Michigan No‑Fault insurance on the vehicle before registration. Proof of insurance must be presented at the SOS office (or indicated on the application).

🆔 3. Identification

Bring your valid government ID (driver’s license or state ID) — all owners listed on the title must appear or be properly represented with Power of Attorney.

💰 Fees & Taxes

Sales/Use Tax

  • Michigan charges a 6% use tax on the purchase price or fair market value (whichever is greater) at the time of titling.
  • Trade in credit up to $9000
  • Certain family transfers are tax‑exempt (e.g., spouse, parent/child, siblings).
  • Lease vehicles are paid monthly

⚠️ Other Notes

  • Drive‑home period: After buying a vehicle, you may drive it unregistered for up to 3 days without plates, but you must have the signed title and proof of insurance.
  • Nonresidents: Vehicles from other states can be operated for up to 90 days if not registered in Michigan. After that, Michigan registration is required.
