📅 Deadlines & Timing

  • If you buy a vehicle, you must transfer the title to your name promptly after purchase (Minnesota strongly recommends within 10 days of sale to avoid complications).
  • If you move to Minnesota with a vehicle registered out of state, you have 60 days after establishing residency to register and title it here.
  • You cannot legally operate a vehicle on Minnesota roads without valid registration (unless temporary dealer tags/trip permits are issued).

🪪 1. Proof of Ownership & Title Documents

To obtain a Minnesota title (proof of ownership):

From a dealer:

  • Minnesota dealers will usually prepare and submit the required paperwork to title and register the vehicle for you — including the Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO) for a new vehicle or the existing title for a used one.

From a private seller:

  • The original title, fully completed by the seller(s) and buyer(s). Both parties must sign it.
    • The odometer disclosure must be completed for most cars (usually for those 2011 or newer).
    • A bill of sale is not legally required but is strongly recommended as proof of transaction.
  • If a lien was on the vehicle and has been satisfied, bring the lien release or other documentation.

Out‑of‑state vehicles:

  • You must present the current out‑of‑state title (or a current registration/other acceptable ownership documentation) to get Minnesota plates; the Minnesota title is only issued once the original out‑of‑state title is submitted.

🧑‍💼 2. Insurance & ID

  • You must have no‑fault auto insurance that meets Minnesota requirements before registration can be issued.
  • Bring a valid photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, passport, etc.) when you apply.

💰 3. Taxes & Fees

Minnesota Motor Vehicle Sales Tax (MVST)

  • 6.875% on the purchase price of new and used vehicles.
  • In some cases for older low‑value vehicles (e.g., at least 10 years old and valued under $3,000), a flat tax may apply.
  • Trade in credit allowed but vehicle traded must be registered in MN
