DMV Mississippi

Mississippi DMV Services

  • You must register and title a vehicle within 30 days after purchase or after becoming a Mississippi resident. Failure to do so generally results in late penalties and possibly an additional $250 penalty.

🪪 1. Proof of Ownership (Title)

🔹 New Vehicle

  • If bought from a Mississippi dealer, the dealer typically prepares and submits the title application for you. You’ll later take the yellow copy of the title application to the county Tax Collector when registering.

🔹 Used Vehicle (Private Sale)

  • You need the certificate of title signed over by the seller. The seller must complete all assignment sections on the title (don’t leave the buyer’s name blank).
  • If the title has no space for sale price, bring a bill of sale.

🔹 Out‑of‑State Vehicle

  • Bring the out‑of‑state title. If there’s no title (e.g., never titled), you must provide the Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO).
  • You’ll likely also need a completed odometer disclosure statement when titling the vehicle.

💵 3. Taxes

📌 Sales/Use Tax

  • Mississippi assesses 5% sales tax on most vehicles based on net purchase price after discounts and trade‑ins plus document fee, delivery fee, accessories, etc.
  • Not a reciprocal state

🪪 4. New Residents & Out‑of‑State Vehicles

  • If you’re a new Mississippi resident, you must title and register your out‑of‑state vehicle within 30 days of moving to Mississippi.
  • Provide your out‑of‑state title and registration, odometer disclosure, and applicable fee/tax payments with the application.
