🕐 Deadlines

• You must apply for title and registration within 30 days of purchase or acquisition (new or used). If you wait longer, the state adds a $25 late penalty starting on day 31, then another $25 every 30 days (up to a $200 maximum).
• New Missouri residents also must title and register their out‑of‑state vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency.

🧾 1. Proof of Ownership (Title Documents)

To get a title in your name:

🚗 Used Vehicle

• The Certificate of Title properly signed over to you by the seller.
• If the seller doesn’t provide a title with price/assignment filled out, you may also need a bill of sale (recommended).

🚘 New Vehicle

• Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO) provided by the dealer.

🌍 Out‑of‑State Vehicle

• Original out‑of‑state title or other acceptable proof of ownership from your previous state.
• If your lienholder holds the title, you may need to obtain it from them or submit additional proof as outlined by the DOR.

🔎 3. Required Inspections

The state requires certain inspections before titling/registration:

🪪 VIN & Odometer Inspection (ID/OD)

• For out‑of‑state vehicles, you must get a VIN and odometer inspection by an authorized inspection station. A current Missouri safety inspection (see below) can satisfy that requirement.

🛡️ Safety Inspection

• Vehicles typically must pass a safety inspection not more than 60 days before registration.
• Newer vehicles (recent model years) may be exempt from safety inspection — check local requirements.

🌫️ Emissions Inspection

• Required if you live in St. Louis City or St. Louis, Jefferson, St. Charles counties.

📄 4. Insurance & Identification

• Proof of valid auto insurance (Missouri coverage) is required to register the vehicle.
• Bring your valid ID (driver’s license or state ID) to the DOR licensing office.

💵 5. Taxes

• State, city and county tax varies on customer’s address
• If lease vehicle paid monthly
• Reciprocal with CA
• Trade in credit allowed
