đź“„ 1. Required Documentation to Title the Vehicle

🔹 A. Proof of Ownership

New Vehicle (from a dealer)

  • Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) or equivalent.
  • Bill of Sale/Dealer Sale Paperwork showing purchase price and date.
    Dealers often file title paperwork for you, but you must ensure everything is correct and complete.

Used Vehicle

  • Original Certificate of Title signed by the seller.
    • The seller must complete the assignment on the title (including sale price, date, buyer info, and odometer reading).
  • If the title lacks required fields (some older titles), you may need a Bill of Sale.

Out‑of‑State Title

  • Present the out‑of‑state title.
  • A VIN inspection (by a Deputy Registrar) may be required before issuing an Ohio title.

đź§ľ B. Odometer Disclosure

  • Required on vehicles less than 10 years old.
  • It should be recorded on the back of the title itself or on a separate Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form BMV 3724) if space on the title is insufficient.

🪪 C. Identification

  • A valid Ohio driver license or state ID (or other acceptable government‑issued ID).

💰 2. Taxes 

  • The rate varies by county and city customer resides based on purchase price + document fee + accessories + gap insurance +etc
  • No trade in allowed on used vehicle purchases only on new ones
  • If lease paid monthly

đźš™ 3. Registering the Vehicle

Once the title is in your name:

đź“„ A. Required Documents for Registration

  • Ohio Certificate of Title in your name or memorandum title
  • Proof of Ohio auto liability insurance
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license or ID
  • Payment for registration and plate fees.

đź•’ 4. Deadlines & Timing

âś” Within 30 Days

  • You should title and register a vehicle within 30 days of purchase or taking ownership to avoid late fees.
  • This applies whether you bought from a dealer or private seller.

🏠 Out‑of‑State or New Resident

  • If you just moved to Ohio, submit your out‑of‑state title and registration plus Ohio insurance and ID to transfer title and register here within 30 days of establishing residency.
