Deadlines for Titling & Registration

Title and/or register your vehicle within:

• 60 days of purchase (new or used) in Colorado;
• 90 days after becoming a Colorado resident with a vehicle already owned.

Failure to meet these deadlines can result in late fees.

Required Documents to Title a Vehicle

To title a new or used vehicle in Colorado, bring the following to your County Motor Vehicle Office:

Proof of Ownership

• The current title properly endorsed by the previous owner (or Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin if never titled before).
• A bill of sale (for sales tax and ownership establishment).

Identification

• Secure and verifiable photo ID (e.g., Colorado driver’s license or other accepted state/federal ID).

Odometer Disclosure

• Completed odometer disclosure, required on most vehicles.

Proof of Insurance

• Colorado-compliant auto insurance proof (card, declaration page, or letter) listing the vehicle’s VIN.

VIN Inspection

• VIN verification (Form DR 2698): Required if the vehicle was titled out-of-state. Must be done by a law enforcement officer, licensed dealer, or licensed emissions/testing station.

Liens

• If the vehicle is financed, provide the original mortgage/security agreement with lienholder information.

Note: If the car has never been titled (e.g., from a manufacturer or not previously titled), you will need an MSO and possibly a weight slip for certain vehicles.

Special Situations

Out-of-State Vehicles

If you bought the car out of state or moved from another state:

• Out-of-state title/registration and have a VIN verification (DR 2698) completed.

Gifts & Inheritance

• If the vehicle was gifted or inherited, you may still need a bill of sale or proof of gift, and emissions/VIN requirements may still apply.

Temporary Operation

Colorado allows temporary permits so you can legally drive the car while you complete the title/registration — check with your county DMV office for availability.

Taxes

• Sales tax, city and county taxes are determined by the customer’s address
• Reciprocal with CA only 2.9%
• Trade in credit
• For Lease transactions, we are required to forward any sales tax collected at signing and provide CO State and city account #
