📌 1. When You Must Title & Register

  • You must title and register the vehicle within 30 days of purchase or acquisition (private sale or out-of-state purchase) to avoid a late-filing penalty (about $20).
  • New Idaho residents must title and register their vehicle within 30 days of moving to Idaho.

🎯 2. Proof of Ownership (Title Documents)

To title a vehicle in Idaho, you need:

🚘 New Vehicle (Dealer Purchase)

  • Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) properly assigned to you by the dealer.

🚗 Used Vehicle (Private Party or Dealer)

  • The current title signed over to you by the seller, with any lienholder releases noted.
  • If the sale price isn’t printed on the title, bring a bill of sale showing vehicle description, sale price, buyer’s full legal name, seller’s signature, and date.
  • Odometer disclosure is required for vehicles newer than about 2010 and under 16,000 lbs (typically shown on the title or on a separate form).

🔍 3. VIN Inspection

  • A VIN inspection is required if the vehicle hasn’t been titled in Idaho before or was titled out of state. This inspection verifies the vehicle’s identity and is typically done at the county assessor’s office, by law enforcement, or by a licensed dealer.

📑 4. Identification & Residency

When you title and register the car, you must provide:

  • Valid photo ID (driver’s license or Idaho-issued ID) or other proof of identity and residency.
  • A verifiable physical address (your Idaho residence) and mailing address.

💰 5.  Taxes

Sales/Use Tax

  • Idaho generally charges 6 % sales tax based on the sale price or fair market value (unless exempt). Documentation of tax paid previously may help.

 🛡️ 6. Insurance Requirements

Before registration, your vehicle must be covered by a liability insurance policy from an insurer licensed in Idaho, with at least the state-required minimum coverage.
