⏰ Deadlines & Timing

  • If you purchased a vehicle (new or used) in Illinois, you generally should apply for title and registration within 20–30 days of the purchase to avoid late penalties.
  • If you’re a new Illinois resident, you typically have 30 days after establishing residency to title and register a vehicle previously titled elsewhere.

🪪 3. Odometer

  • For most vehicles under 10 years old, you must include an odometer reading on the title or application.

🛡️ 4. Proof of Insurance

  • You must present proof of valid Illinois auto insurance that meets state minimum requirements before registering.

🪪 5. Proof of Residency

  • Bring acceptable proof of Illinois residency (e.g., ID, utility bill, lease agreement). This is often required to register the vehicle.

🧾 6. Sales Tax 

  • Sales tax % varies on county and city.
  • For lease transactions sales tax is usually paid upfront and is based on Downpayment + total amount of payments * sales tax %
  • Sales tax exempt if private party to private party transactions
  • IL is NOT reciprocal with CA on sales tax
  • Trade in allowed
