DMV Iowa

Iowa DMV Services

You generally must apply to title and register your vehicle within 30 days of purchase or acquisition. Iowa law also requires titling & registration within 30 days of establishing residency in Iowa.

  • Dealerships often submit paperwork and taxes on your behalf, but if you buy from a private party you must take care of this yourself.

💵 Fees & Taxes

  • 📌 1. Sales/Use Tax
    • Iowa imposes a one‑time vehicle registration tax (commonly thought of like a sales tax) of about 6 % of the purchase price (dealer price or value if private sale).
    • Reciprocal state but will need Statement of facts from selling dealer stating sales tax collected
    • Sales tax upfront on a lease
    • Trade in allowed but vehicle traded must be registered in IA under the same registered owner name

🪪 2. Odometer & Damage Disclosures

  • Odometer disclosures are required for most vehicles — either on the back of the title or on Form 411077 for newer cars.
  • For relatively new vehicles, a damage disclosure (Form 411108) is also often required.

🛡️ Insurance & ID

  • Bring proof of valid auto insurance covering the vehicle before registration (state liability coverage at minimum).
  • Bring valid photo ID and proof of your Iowa address (driver’s license, utility bill, etc.).
