🗓️ Deadlines — When You Must Act

  • You must apply for a Nebraska title and register the vehicle within 30 days of purchase or acquisition.
  • If you move to Nebraska with a car titled elsewhere, you generally have 60 days after establishing residency to transfer the title and register it in Nebraska.

🪪 1. Proof of Ownership (Title Documents)

You need proper ownership documentation before titling:

📌 Used Vehicle

  • The current Certificate of Title signed over to you by the seller with all assignment fields completed. The seller must certify the odometer and sign where indicated.
  • The seller should also provide a Bill of Sale or a completed Nebraska Sales/Use Tax and Tire Fee Statement (Form 6‑MB) to help calculate tax owed.

📌 New Vehicle

  • Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) properly assigned to you by the dealer if the vehicle was never titled before.
  • Dealers often prepare the paperwork for you, but you’ll need the assignment and signatures.

📌 Out‑of‑State Vehicle

  • You must surrender the out‑of‑state title at the time you apply for a Nebraska title. If your lienholder holds the title, the county treasurer may request it from the lender on your behalf.
  • If the prior state did not issue titles, bring the last registration and a notarized Bill of Sale.

🔍 2. Inspection & Additional Requirements

  • Many Nebraska counties require a vehicle inspection (VIN/odometer) for out‑of‑state vehicles (often done at the sheriff’s office) before registration is issued; typical inspection fees are modest (around $10).
  • Proof of current auto insurance that meets Nebraska minimum coverage must be presented when registering.

💵 3. Taxes & Fees

  • Sales tax depends on the city and county registered owner resides in
  • Trade in allowed but vehicle traded must be registered in the state of NE and will need a copy of the NE registration
  • If lease vehicle sales tax is paid monthly
