New Jersey DMV Services

  • If you bought the vehicle, you must transfer the title within 10 business days to avoid a penalty.
  • If you moved to NJ, you must title and register your vehicle within 60 days of establishing residency (or before your current registration expires).

📄 Required Documents for Title & Registration

  1. Proof of Ownership

New Vehicle

  • Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) — provided by the dealer.
  • The dealer typically handles titling paperwork if you buy from a NJ dealer.

Used Vehicle (NY, NJ, or out‑of‑state)

  • Properly assigned title
    • Seller must complete the assignment section on the back of the title with buyer name, sale date, sale price, odometer reading and seller signature.
  • If the previous state does not issue titles, you need:
    • Last registration card or a notarized statement from the seller with year, make, VIN, price, and sale date, and a VIN photo or tracing.
  1. Identification & Insurance
  • Your driver’s license or ID (NJ or other acceptable ID).
  • Proof of New Jersey auto insurance — policy card or company name & policy number.
  1. Additional Information (if applicable)
  • Lienholder information & financing statement if the car is financed.
  • Power of Attorney if someone else is signing for you.
  • Entity Identification Number (EIN) if the buyer is a business.

💰 Taxes 

  • New Jersey sales tax (6.625%) is due on the purchase price + document fee.
  • 0.4% Luxury Tax on vehicles over $45,000 and over on a new vehicle purchase.  No luxury tax if vehicle is fully electric
  • Electric vehicle surcharge may apply if your vehicle is a zero‑emission vehicle (e.g., larger upfront fee for new EVs).
