🚗 1️ When You Apply

In Oklahoma, you complete the title and registration together.

  • You must title the vehicle before or at the same time you register it.
  • If the vehicle has a lien, the title may be held electronically by the lender.
  • Title/registration should be done promptly after purchase (dealers typically handle this for new vehicle purchases).

📄 2️ Required Documents

🆕 A. Proof of Ownership

New Vehicle

  • Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) — provided by the dealer.
  • Completed vehicle purchase paperwork.

Used Vehicle

  • Signed title from the seller
    • Commonly called the “assignment” on the back of the title.
    • Must include seller signature, buyer name, sale price, date, and odometer reading if applicable.

Out‑of‑State Vehicle

  • Out‑of‑state title showing ownership.
  • Oklahoma Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Inspection may be required when titling out‑of‑state vehicles (often done at the tag agency).

🧾 C. Odometer Disclosure

  • Required on the title or a separate odometer disclosure statement for vehicles less than 10 years old.
  • Most titles include an odometer section; if it doesn’t, a separate statement may be used.

🪪 E. Identification & Insurance (for Registration)

  • Valid driver license or government ID (does not need to be Oklahoma‑issued to title).
  • Proof of auto liability insurance (for registration).
    • Oklahoma requires insurance meeting minimum liability coverage.

💰 3️ Taxes

  • Oklahoma imposes a 4.5% motor vehicle excise tax on the purchase price (or fair market value) when titling a vehicle.  Sales tax has to be paid within 30 days of purchase before penalties are due and they go up daily.
  • Not reciprocal state
  • No trade in credit given
  • If lease vehicle  tax is paid upfront
  • For tribal customers title and registration are processed through Cherokee Nation.  Sales tax is still due but at a lower rate

🪪 4️ VIN Inspection (if Applicable)

  • A VIN inspection is required for used out‑of‑state vehicles
