🚗 Basic rule (applies to BOTH new & used) 

  • You must apply within 30 days of purchase or pay late fees
  • Title + registration are done together
  • You must be an Oregon resident (or required to register there)

📄 What you need for ANY vehicle 

These are required whether it’s new or used:

  • Application for Title & Registration (Form 735-226)
  • Ownership document (title OR manufacturer certificate)
  • Bill of sale / releases from prior owners (if applicable)
  • Lien release(s) if there was a loan
  • Odometer disclosure (for vehicles under ~20 years old)
  • Fees (title + registration + plates)

 Sometimes also required:

  • VIN inspection (especially out-of-state vehicles)
  • Emissions test (DEQ) in certain areas like Portland/Medford
  • Proof of Oregon residency (if new resident)

🧾 Extra things people often forget

  • Insurance is required to legally drive/register the car
  • Plates may transfer with the car (in Oregon) or you can get new ones
  • New residents must register within 30 days of moving
