The  CA Number

Resources

A CA number (often written as CA#) is a California Motor Carrier Identification Number.

It’s issued by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and is used to identify and regulate motor carriers operating in California, especially for safety enforcement.

Think of it as California’s version of a carrier ID, separate from your USDOT number.

Who Needs a CA Number?

You generally need a CA number if you:

  • Operate commercial vehicles in California
  • AND are involved in interstate or intrastate commerce
  • AND the vehicle meets commercial motor vehicle criteria

This includes:

  • Trucks
  • Truck-tractor combinations
  • Some pickup and box trucks
  • Certain passenger carriers

Even if:

  • You already have a USDOT number
  • You only operate within California
  • You’re a small operation

California still wants its own identifier.

Who Does NOT Need a CA Number?

You may not need a CA number if:

  • You operate only passenger vehicles not for hire
  • Your vehicle is used exclusively for personal use
  • You fall under specific exempt categories (like some farm operations)

But California exemptions are narrow — when in doubt, assume it’s required.

What the CA Number Is Used For

The CA number is used by:

  • CHP officers at roadside inspections
  • Terminal inspections
  • Safety audits
  • California DMV and CPUC systems

It ties your operation to:

  • Safety records
  • Insurance
  • Compliance status

CA Number vs USDOT Number

This is the part that confuses most people.

Many carriers operating in California must have both.

Where the CA Number Must Be Displayed

If required, the CA number must usually be:

  • Marked on both sides of the vehicle
  • In contrasting color
  • Clearly legible
  • Along with the legal business name

Format example:

ABC Logistics LLC

CA 1234567

USDOT 9876543

CA Number and MCP (Important)

In California, the CA number is closely tied to the Motor Carrier Permit (MCP) issued by the California DMV.

  • Most carriers need both
  • No MCP = no legal operation in CA
  • The CA number is used to track MCP compliance

This is a big one — having a CA number alone does not mean you’re fully legal.
