What the NM Tax ID Permit Is

The NM Tax ID permit usually refers to New Mexico’s Weight Distance Tax (WDT) registration, which is tied to a New Mexico Taxation & Revenue Department (TRD) Tax ID, often called a CRS number.

In plain terms:

It’s New Mexico’s way of charging heavy trucks for the distance they travel inside New Mexico, instead of using IFTA fuel tax.

Why New Mexico Is Different

Most states collect road-use tax through IFTA (fuel tax).
New Mexico does NOT for heavy vehicles.

Instead, NM uses a Weight Distance Tax, which is based on:

  • Miles driven in New Mexico
  • Vehicle weight

That’s why this permit exists.

Who Needs an NM Tax ID / WDT Permit?

You need it if your vehicle:

  • Operates in New Mexico
  • Has a GVW over 26,000 lbs
  • Is a commercial vehicle
  • Is traveling interstate or intrastate through NM

This includes:

  • Semi-trucks
  • Tractor-trailers
  • Heavy straight trucks

Even if:

  • You already have IFTA
  • You already have IRP
  • You only pass through NM occasionally

Who Does NOT Need It?

You usually do not need it if:

  • Your vehicle is 26,000 lbs or less
  • You never enter New Mexico
  • You obtain a temporary NM trip permit instead

What the NM Tax ID Is Used For

The NM Tax ID allows you to:

  • Report miles driven in New Mexico
  • Pay weight distance tax instead of fuel tax
  • Operate legally through NM ports of entry and weigh stations

Without it, NM will stop you.

How the NM Weight Distance Tax Works

  1. Register With NM Taxation & Revenue

You’re issued a NM CRS Tax ID.

  1. File Monthly or Quarterly Reports

You report:

  • Miles driven inside New Mexico
  • Vehicle weight

Tax is calculated using a rate chart based on weight + miles.

  1. Pay the Tax

You pay NM directly — not through IFTA.

Temporary Option: NM Trip Permit

If you:

  • Rarely travel in NM
  • Don’t want ongoing filings

You can buy a temporary NM Weight Distance Trip Permit instead.

This is common for:

  • One-time loads
  • Occasional NM trips
