What IRP Registration Is (International Registration Plan)

IRP registration is a system that allows commercial vehicles to legally operate across multiple states or provinces using one license plate and one registration.

It applies in:

• The United States
• Canada
• Some parts of Mexico

Instead of registering your truck separately in every state or province you drive through, IRP lets you register once in your base jurisdiction, and fees are shared (apportioned) among all jurisdictions where you operate.

Who Needs IRP Registration?

You generally need IRP if your vehicle:

• Is used for commercial purposes
• Travels in two or more IRP jurisdictions
• Meets at least one of these:
  • Has a GVW over 26,000 lbs (11,793 kg)
  • Has 3 or more axles, regardless of weight
  • Is used in combination (tractor + trailer) and exceeds 26,000 lbs

Typical examples:

• Semi-trucks
• Tractor-trailers
• Heavy straight trucks crossing state lines
