Resources

A SCAC Code (Standard Carrier Alpha Code) is a unique 2–4 letter identification code used to identify transportation companies.

It is issued by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA).

🚛 What Is a SCAC Code Used For?

A SCAC code is primarily used in:

  • Freight billing
  • Bills of lading
  • Electronic data interchange (EDI)
  • Customs filings
  • Port and rail operations

It helps shippers, brokers, ports, railroads, and government agencies quickly identify a carrier in shipping documents and tracking systems.

You may need one if you are:

  • A for-hire motor carrier
  • A freight broker
  • A company working with ports or railroads
  • Filing freight information with U.S. Customs
  • Working with large shippers that require EDI integration

Many intermodal operations require a SCAC.

  • ABCD
  • XYZT

Each code is unique to one company.
