KYU Number

Resources

A KYU Number is a Kentucky-specific motor carrier identification number issued by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). It is mainly tied to Kentucky’s Weight Distance Tax (KYU tax).

🔎 What the KYU Number Actually Does

Kentucky charges a weight distance tax on certain heavy commercial vehicles for miles driven inside the state.

The KYU number:

  • Registers your company with Kentucky
  • Tracks taxable miles driven in Kentucky
  • Links your business to required quarterly tax filings

Even if you’re just passing through Kentucky, you may still need one.

🚛 Who Must Have a KYU Number?

You typically need a KYU number if:

  • Your vehicle’s combined weight exceeds 59,999 lbs
  • You operate in Kentucky (including out-of-state carriers)
  • You are operating in interstate commerce

This applies to:

  • Semis
  • Heavy straight trucks
  • Truck + trailer combinations over 59,999 lbs

💰 Kentucky Weight Distance Tax (KYU Tax)

  • Based on miles driven in Kentucky
  • Filed quarterly
  • Separate from fuel tax (IFTA)

Even if you already file:

You may still owe Kentucky’s weight distance tax.

📋 Display Requirements

  • The KYU number must be displayed on both sides of the vehicle
  • It is different from your USDOT number
  • It is different from your MC number
